B&H EVENT SPACE

Jen Davis, a brooklyn based photographer will be at the B&H Event Space for a lecture on her long-term self-portrait project that began in 2002. Jen will track the development of the project in sequential order from the first picture made to present. In her extraordinarily personal body of work, she deals with insecurities about her body image and the direct correlation between self-perception and the way one is perceived by others. Photography is the medium Jen uses to tell her story through life; it’s an outlet for revealing her thoughts and opinions about the society in which we live - a society that dictates beauty based on ones physical appearance.
In her photographs, Jen aims to raise questions regarding beauty, desire, body image, and identity through a focused observation of her personal story. She has built a relationship between the camera and herself where she transforms the act of taking a photograph into a performance for the camera. Many of her pictures take place right in her home, revealing aspects of herself that are private and personal. Jen’s work is based on personal experiences that she has re-constructed into a photograph, as well as made up fantasies of what she imagines a physical relationship to be regarding intimacy, love and desire.
